΄ΊΣκΦ±²₯ Me
I love teaching Exercise Science! I fell in love with training after I got my first pair of 5-pound dumbbells at age 11. I still have those dumbbells as a reminder of my humble beginnings. I have been involved in many sports over my life, including basketball, track and field, cross country, highland games, strongman, powerlifting, and Olympic weightlifting. I still compete in lifting sports while simultaneously training many athletes as head coach of the Salvation Army Lifting Team (SALT). Our motto at SALT is "Be Kind, Lift Heavy." I have been coaching for SALT since 1990 and this little gym has produced many great young men and women. The gym is drug-free for all levels and is free of charge. I run this program as a service to the community and a way to give back to those who are seeking a safe space to train.
Exploring new ideas, testing theories, questioning all we have been taught, and helping students become better critical thinkers are my main goals in my teaching. I hope to help students find their passion for exercise science and then follow the best path forward so they can become whatever their heart desires.
My students hear these phrases often.
- Eat better, move better. This is what it boils down to for health and fitness.
- Define and Defend. My students should be able to clearly DEFINE their ideas and then be able to DEFEND their beliefs, advice, reasoning, or exercise programming.
- It's all about the learning. Even when students may not immediately see the direct application, I strive to make sure every single class teaches something and hopefully, every class leaves my students with some new knowledge that they can apply in the future.
