WIU Football Helps Community Through Bed Building Event
November 22, 2024
MACOMB, IL - - The ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ Illinois University football team has been hard at work building a team on the field, but as the season winds down, it took time to give back.
Eighty members of the WIU football team came together with Campus Students for Christ for the "Sleep in Heavenly Peace" event, building 35 beds for children in need. Brandon Kreczmer, associate head coach, said this is all a part of the team's efforts to give back to the community and what being a Leatherneck is all about.
"The Sleep in Heavenly Peace Build was a huge success," Kreczmer said. "The players and coaches had a fun time giving back to the community and helping people in need. "We try to do some type of community service every week or every other week. We are willing to do anything to help out in the community."
The 35 beds built exceeded expectations, Kreczmer said, and they could have made more but ran out of materials.
"Everyone helped out from sanding, drilling and branding the beds," Kreczmer said. "We always preach to our players to be thankful for the opportunity we have and to be able to help people in need."
WIU will wrap up its football season at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23 at Hanson Field against Gardner-Webb University.
