Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ Illinois University students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Current student Macullum Steen reflects on the traditions, memories and connections that define his experience at ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ Illinois University.

When asked what it means to be a Leatherneck, Steen shared that it's about following in the footsteps of family members who attended WIU. His father and older brother are part of the WIU legacy and his younger sister is also a current student.

Steen's favorite memories at WIU include tailgating before football games and visiting campus locations his father often reminisced about from his time at the university.

Steen, a sophomore majoring in emergency management, has been actively involved in campus life, serving as a Resident Assistant, participating in fraternity life through Sigma Chi and contributing to the Inter-Fraternity Council.

For prospective students, Steen's advice is simple: get involved. He credits WIU as a great place to build connections and make meaningful experiences.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite WIU students, alumni and community members to share their stories and be featured in this series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
