WIU Scholarship Resources
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology proudly offers four annual scholarships for undergraduate majors. In addition, graduates are eligible for two scholarships/awards.

- The number of scholarships are dependent upon the number and quality of applications received.
- Scholarship amounts vary based on available funds.
- Scholarships for the following academic year are awarded each spring semester.
- Recipients are selected by the Sociology and Anthropology Department faculty and chairperson on the basis of the application criteria and supporting material.
Undergraduate Scholarships
Harriet Stull Sociology Scholarship
The Stull Scholarship is an annual award ($1,600) given to an outstanding Sociology student with sophomore standing or higher and evidence of leadership in department, college, university and/or community activities.
Kara Leigh Broughton Memorial Scholarship
The Broughton Memorial Scholarship is an annual award ($1,000) given to an outstanding Sociology junior or senior and award for essay on “How You Intend to Use Your WIU Education to Make a Difference in this World.â€
Pathways Scholarship for Transfer Students
The Pathways Scholarship is an annual award ($500) given to an incoming Transfer student majoring in either Sociology or Anthropology.
Randall and Delores Lindsey Sociology and Anthropology Scholarship
The Lindsey Sociology Scholarship is an annual award ($500 disbursed over two semesters) given to one outstanding sociology student and one outstanding anthropology student who illustrate financial need and demonstrate a commitment to sociology or anthropology and cultural proficiency through experiences in multicultural activities.
Carl B. Larson Scholarship in Archeology
The Larson scholarship is givent to a junior or senior Anthropology major in good standing who demonstrates an interest in archaeology as a career and must have completed the WIU archaeological field school (ANTH 325 & ANTH326). Minimum GPA of 3.0 required.
Graduate Scholarships
Dr. Won M. Hurh Memorial Graduate Thesis Award in Sociology
The Won Moo Hurh Graduate Thesis Award in Sociology is an annual award of no less than $1000, to be given to the author of a Master's thesis in Sociology judged to be of "excellent quality and worthy of an award" of recognition. Designed to encourage graduate students to select the thesis exit option in fulfillment of their graduate degrees, the award will be made at the end of each spring semester.
The Sociological Master's Scholarship
This scholarship is an annual award ($1,000) given to an outstanding graduate student in the M.A. program in Sociology. Applicants must meet a set of academic requirements and submit an essay on how they hope to use their sociological skills upon completion of the M.A. degree. Awarded each spring. Deadline for applications is May 1 of each year.
